OCTOBER 3rd, 2009, ASES LEXINGTON SOLAR TOUR
Raven Run, designed in 1975, was the first residence in Kentucky to combine superinsulation and passive and active solar systems with a geothermal heat pump and an attached greenhouse. Internationally published in professional and popular journals, Raven Run’s innovations were widely emulated and its super-efficient multi-stage air collection system received a U.S. patent. Its unique form and spaces demonstrated that responsiveness to sun, site, climate and lifestyle could indeed generate a new architecture. A 5.25kW solar photovoltaic addition to the nearby CSC Design Studio office offsets the electrical usage for all the buildings on the property, making it a zero-net energy site.
